Sapit alarmed by school riots

The Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya Jackson Ole Sapit has called on education stakeholders to give psychosocial support to learners as one way of addressing rising cases of indiscipline in schools.

Speaking at Makueni ACK Christian and Social Training Centre during the graduation of clerics, Sapit condemned the current wave of school unrest.

“What’s happening is disheartening. I want to tell the students that no amount of anger can justify the burning of schools,” said Sapit.

He reminded the learners that their actions only served to burden their already struggling parents.

The Archbishop asked parents to be more involved in their children’s lives, saying many of them have little time for their children.

Sapit also warned leaders against engaging in antisocial behaviour in public, saying children were watching an emulating them.

He said it was shocking to see leaders throwing filthy words or physically fighting in public.

In recent weeks, several schools have been burnt down and teachers attacked by students.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has warned that parents will pay for damages caused by their children.

He also reminded learners that any acts of indiscipline will reflect on their documents.

“Burn down schools but you will pay. There will be no readmission of students with criminal records to other schools,” Magoha.
