Head teachers back Magoha on reintroduction of caning

The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (Kessha) has said corporal punishment should be re-introduced to restore discipline in schools.

Speaking to Education News during the burial of retired teacher Joseph Lunani in Lugulu, Webuye East Constituency, Kessha Western region chair Edward Bikala said the rising cases of student riots was alarming.

Bikala, who is the Sirende Secondary School Chief Principal, said the association supported Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha’s call for the reintroduction of caning to curb indiscipline in schools.

He was particularly concerned that most of the schools where cases of student unrest have been reported are in Bungoma County.

”It’s worrying that over ten schools in Bungoma have been closed indefinitely due to misbehaviour,” said the Kessha chair.

He called for a meeting of education stakeholders to deliberate on the wave of student strikes.

Bikala observed that goodwill from leaders plays an important role in success of schools and learning.

”Politicians should work closely with school heads for success of students,” he said.
