A university student suspected of killing her mother has been released on a Sh250,000 bond by a Kakamega court.

Amelia Jacobath Liabule, a Master’s degree student at the University of Nairobi, was granted the bond by Justice William Musyoka.

Liabule has been in custody for close to a month over the death of her 67-year-old mother Leonida Benedina Nabwangu.

Nabwangu, a retired primary school teacher who was a pastor at the Mumbetsa Church of God, was found dead in her house at Shisende village in Kakamega County.

Her daughter and step son were arrested in connection to the murder but the latter was released due to lack of evidence.

Detectives believe she killed her mother because of a long-running domestic feud revolving around property and a love triangle.

At the time of her arrest, Kakamega South OCS Sylvester Olalo and Shisele Chief Donald Khabuchi said they were trying to find out if the 30-year-old was in the company of other people when she allegedly committed the murder.

An autopsy report revealed that the cleric was hit with a blunt object and strangled.

The investigating officer told the court that the suspect stayed with her mother and was present the night she was murdered.

“When a person dies in mysterious circumstances, the first suspect is the one who was closest to him or her at that point,” he said.

Justice Musyoka said he had released the suspect in line with provisions of the law. He set the hearing for March 23.
