Don’t keep children at home when schools reopen, parents told

By John Ochieng

Parents have been urged not to detain their children at home, for fear of contracting Covid-19, when schools re-open on January 4.

Rongo University Vice-Chancellor Prof Yusuf Elmi Mohammed said keeping the children at home after being away from school for months may jeopardize their future.

Speaking during the university’s first virtual graduation ceremony last week, Prof Elmi expressed concern over the high number of teenage pregnancies reported during the extended school holidays.

The chancellor asked the government to provide adequate facilities to schools to ensure smooth resumption of learning.

Prof Elmi said most public universities were fully prepared to resume learning.

He urged Kenyans to adhere to the Ministry of Health protocols to curb the spread of the virus, saying as long as people observe the guidelines, the disease is manageable.

Prof Elmi also called for mass testing of learners and teachers when learning institutions re-open next month.

During the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof Samuel Gudu asked for adequate funding to allow universities offer quality education.

Prof Gudu also urged students to report promptly.
