The Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Ministry for Education Mumina Bonaya has challenged universities to raise their efforts in research that can help resolve the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bonaya said that such efforts can lead to a vaccine development.

The CAS was speaking at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kakamega on Friday when she graced the 15th graduation ceremony.

Bonaya commented MMUST for maintaining online classes, but warned that virtual learning should not lower the quality of education.

Many universities embraced virtual classes when learning institutions were closed early this year to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Bonaya also asked institutions of higher learning to offer skills that can empower graduates to create jobs for themselves and others.

Some 2,537 students graduated from MMUST this year, representing 55 per cent of the total candidates. Others were hindered by challenges among them lack of internet connection and mobile data bundles.

MMUST chancellor Dr. Peter Muthoka underscored the need for the country to focus on developing more youth programmess in order to utilise thousands of young people who graduate every year.

Dr Muthoka also outlined the need to align TVET learning towards the current working market in order to meet the country’s needs.
