700 pupils in Lamu miss school due to floods

Lamu

Over 700 learners from Mokowe Arid Zone Primary School in Lamu County are unable to attend school as a result of devastating floods in the region.

Lamu County Director of Education Joshua Kaaga confirmed the continued closure of the school, attributing it to the poor drainage feeder roads in the area, which consequently led to flooding on the school premises.

Since 2014, the school has served over 300 Boni learners after the schools in their villages were forced to shut down due to attacks by the extremist group Al Shabaab.

Kaaga mentioned that the water levels were gradually receding, and if they dry up completely, the school might reopen the following week.

Parents of the affected students have appealed to the government to put up temporary classrooms in the vicinity to allow their children to continue with their studies as they wait for the floods to subside.
