7-year old dies in grisly accident in Nakuru

A minor aged 7 years old has passed away in an accident which saw 10 other passengers injured after a matatu they were travelling in got rammed into by a trailer which had developed mechanical problems on Sunday night.

Nakuru West Police Commander Frace Wahome confirmed the accident that occurred at Ngata Bridge along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

“The trailer, which was heading towards Nakuru, developed mechanical problems before ramming into the fourteen-seater matatu that was ferrying passengers from Nakuru town to Ngata,” he said.

Wahome added: “At least eleven people sustained injuries and were rushed to Nakuru Level Five Hospital, but one minor, aged seven, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.”

Accidents have become rampant in the country claiming a number of lives. As per data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), at least 2,318 people have died in road accidents from January to July.

Pedestrians lead in the number of deaths standing at 824, followed by motorcyclists at 605, drivers 425, pillion riders 213, car passengers 205 and cyclists at 48.

At the same time, Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) says that the Northern Corridor accounts for majority of the country’s black spots.

The Kinungi-Naivasha-Gilgil route remains deadly with Nakuru-Eldoret stretch both having caused the death of eight students between April and June.
