60 girls in Kandara fail to report to school due to pregnancies

Official data shows that some 60 girls in Kandara sub-county, Murang’a County, have not reported back to school because they are pregnant.

Kandara Education Director P. K. Ngugi said the girls fell pregnant during the long holiday occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said most of the girls were students at day secondary schools.

Some of the girls are said to have been impregnated by close relatives, including fathers, brothers, cousins and uncles.

Ngugi explained that where incest is involved, the pregnancy is treated with secrecy by families, making it hard to enforce the law.

He, however, disclosed that some cases had been reported to the police and investigations were going on.

Kandara MP Alice Wahome called for prosecution of perpetrators.

She called on the community to expose incest and other cases of defilement.

The MP said some Sh12.8 million had been disbursed in bursaries to support needy students. The money will benefit 3,200 students, she said.
