Learning remains paralyzed in Angata Barikoi, Narok county days after 5 people were killed over land dispute with of six schools in the area.
The affected institutions include Angata Barikoi Primary, Kabusa, Chelchel, Kapsinendet Comprehensive School, Angata Girls High School, and Angata Boys High School.
According to Joseph Cheruiyot, head teacher at Kapsinendet Ribot Comprehensive School, many learners are yet to report due to heightened tension and displacement of families.
“The land dispute has created fear among parents and learners. Schools are empty. Our students will be at a disadvantage when competing nationally,” said Cheruiyot.
Cheruiyot urged the government to urgently resolve the land dispute, which has sparked protests, evictions, and claims of police brutality in the region, adding that the long standing dispute needs a just, lasting solution that respects historical ownership.

Simeon Ngetich, the head teacher of Chelchel Primary School, said fear and insecurity have made it nearly impossible to resume learning.
“Tension is still high. Families are unsettled, and it’s risky to keep children in schools,” said Ngetich.
He further emphasized that many families possess valid title deeds, and therefore deserve government protection rather than displacement.
“Our people have legal documents. Taking children to makeshift camps or far-away schools is not sustainable,” he added.
Parents and community leaders have repeatedly warned that the unrest is threatening the right to education and deepening inequalities between learners in conflict zones and those in more stable areas.
The stakeholders have called on President William Ruto and the Ministry of Lands to step in and provide a roadmap for peace and land justice, warning that unless action is taken, children from Angata Barikoi could fall far behind academically.
