The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) retooling program for 550 newly recruited Junior High School teachers has commenced in West Pokot County with great enthusiasm.

The Deputy Director of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Jane Nyakoe said that seven experienced trainers, primarily drawn from Curriculum Support Officers, were selected to lead the initiative.

She added that the primary objective of this program was to enhance the skills of these teachers to align with the evolving demands of the 21st century.

During the inauguration of the five-day seminar, Nyakoe emphasized the importance of professionalism among teachers.

She also assured that the welfare of both trainers and trainees would be a top priority, as directed by the Teachers Service Commission headquarters.

Additionally, the Deputy Director highlighted that the course focused on core competencies such as communication and collaboration, citizenship, creativity, critical thinking, learning to learn, self-efficacy, and digital learning.

“It addresses essential topics including effective communication skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), managing difficult learner behaviors, boosting morale and job satisfaction, and promoting punctuality in the workplace,” she stated.

Nyakoe further mentioned that another vital aspect of the program was honing critical thinking skills, enabling teachers to devise practical solutions to real-life problems through problem definition, information gathering, sorting, classification, and analysis.

“Facilitators committed to conducting follow-ups in educational institutions to ensure that teachers were effectively implementing the acquired knowledge,” she said adding that the CBC retooling program is set to span five intensive days.
