Five students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) are among the hundreds of students participating in this year’s global Huawei ICT competitions in China.

The competitions target students enrolled in Huawei ICT academies and those in institutions of higher learning interested in joining the ICT Academy.

Tyler Wanjiru Mercy is competing in the Cloud Track category, Terence Omondi Otieno will showcase his skills in the Network Track category while Anne Kariithi Wanjiku, David Rodney Osodo and Patrick Kisio Muema are competing in the Innovation Track for their invention, the Cardio Intelligent Monitoring System.

Mercy, who secured third place in the Cloud category during the regional competition, noted that the competition provided her with a healthy platform to compete and exchange ideas. She said the experience enhanced her ICT knowledge, practical skills and innovation abilities using new technologies and platforms.

Otieno attested that participation in the competition has provided him with valuable experience, a platform for networking and an opportunity to enhance his skills.

On the other hand, Wanjiku exuded confidence that her team will give a good account of themselves in the global competition.

She noted that the inspiration behind their innovation was the need to bridge the gap between chronic heart condition patients and hospitals.

“We thought it wise to create a new, non-invasive, wireless technology for remote patient monitoring. Our Cardio Intelligent Monitoring System is a computer-based application that receives signals from ECG devices and analyzes ECG patterns. This helps physicians stay updated on their patient’s progress remotely,” explained Kariithi.

The team said the user interface of the application is simple and easy to navigate, enabling both physicians and patients to use the product with minimal assistance.

The university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs Prof Robert Kinyua congratulated the students for qualifying for the global competition and urged them  to put their best foot forward and fly the University’s flag high.

“Such exposures prepare you for the job market and broadens your perspectives to the vast possibilities the world has to offer,” he advised.

Philip Oyier, one of the students’ mentors and a lecturer, lauded the students for demonstrating exceptional training and for their remarkable performance throughout the competition.

“Their outstanding achievements serve as a testament to their passion and dedication to the ever-changing landscape of technology,” he said.

Jonathan Mwai, an ICT officer at JKUAT, praised Huawei for effectively bridging the gap between industry and academia.

He was recently feted by Huawei as an Excellent ICT competition instructor under the Network Track category.
