Primary schools in Murang'a to receive new classrooms

About 47 primary schools in Murang’a County are scheduled to receive new classrooms in preparation for accommodating grade 9 learners by January next year.

A total of 82 classrooms will be built across 47 schools at a cost of Ksh82 million under the Kenya Primary Education Equity Learning (KPEEL) programme, which is funded by the World Bank and the government.

Murang’a County Director of Education, Ann Kiilu, stated that the schools chosen to benefit were selected based on need. She mentioned that many local primary schools already possess the necessary infrastructure to accommodate Grade 9 students.

On Tuesday, during a meeting held at Murang’a Technology primary school to inform school heads, board of management chairs, and members of the school infrastructure committees (SIC), Kiilu mentioned that the construction of the classrooms is expected to take three months.

She noted that following the sensitization forum, which was also attended by officers from procurement and public works, the head teachers and other involved officers will begin the procurement process to source contractors.

“The classrooms are factored into phase one as we wait for phase two, which will include the construction of laboratories and learning resource centres,” she added.

A total of 22,662 students from public primary schools and an additional 2,128 students from private institutions in the county are set to enter Grade 9 next year.

Mutunduini primary school in Kandara Sub- County will benefit the most, having been allocated six new classrooms. Meanwhile, Peter Kariuki School in Maragua Sub- County is set to receive five classrooms.

Kiilu mentioned that the funds have already been distributed to the schools’ accounts and urged the members of the school infrastructure committees to expedite the procurement process.

The ministry expects that the procurement procedures will be rigorously adhered to in selecting qualified contractors. The director emphasized the importance of delivering quality work.
