Government releases over Ksh1B to TVETs for crucial support programmes

The government has released Ksh1.192 billion to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) nationwide to go into provision of crucial support programmes in tuition, utilities, training materials and curricular activities.

A statement from the Ministry of Education (MoE) signed by TVET PS Esther Muoria said the injection of resources aims to foster an environment conducive for effective learning and skill acquisition.

With the focus being on enhancing accessibility and elevating the quality and relevance of TVET, the funds will be channeled into various initiatives.

“These include providing financial assistance to individual trainees, a move designed to empower aspiring professionals in various fields,” she said.

She noted that the strategic investment aligns with broader goals such as reducing youth unemployment and driving sustainable economic growth.

Muoria said the funding ensures the current TVET trainees have ample opportunities for success within and beyond the institution, emphasising the inclusive principle of training for everyone.

She pointed out that the government was committed to delivering employable skills through the TVET institutions to support key economic sectors.

The government had increased funding for university education from Ksh54 billion to Ksh84.6 billon in the current financial year as loans and grants.

The state also increased the budgetary allocation for TVETs   from Ksh5.2 billion to Ksh10 billion in the 2023/24 financial year, translating to Ksh67,000 per year per trainee.
