MMU students strike as part-time lecturers decry 5 years with no salary

By Mutuvi Janet

Multimedia University (MMU) students have this morning gone on a rampage over a number of issues they say need to be addressed by the university management.

According to one of the students who spoke to Education News anonymously complained that some classes were not being attended to by lecturers – who have been complaining about not being paid by the university – increased food prices in the university and a number of them are yet to receive their Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) disbursement.

Security officers arrive at the university to calm the strike by students on the morning of Wednesday, October 19 2022

Efforts to reach the university management and student leaders were futile by the time of publishing this story.

However, University Academic Staff Union (UASU) MMU Chapter Secretary Onesmus Mutio who was outside Nairobi, told Education News that part-time lecturers in the university have not been paid since 2018.

“What I can confirm is that part-time lectures have not been paid since 2018. How do you expect someone who has taught over 5 years without pay to come to work? How do you think they manage their bills? It is inhuman and unfair,” said Mutio.

The official who doubles as the union National Organizing Secretary urged the part-time lecturers to stay away until they are paid in full.
