Two hundred and seventy one students in Wote/Nziu ward, Makueni sub-county have received bursary cheques worth Ksh2 million from the Makueni County government.

Speaking during the disbursement at Wote Green Park, the county Chief Officer for ICT, Education and Internship Nicholus Mutua noted that the county had released Ksh85 million for bursaries to benefit 12,682 beneficiaries across the devolved unit.

Officer Mutua also disclosed that the county’s scholarship programme was now open and students joining Form 1 are encouraged to apply. He added that only 3 students will be picked from each of the 30 wards.

“Priority will be given to orphans. Applicants must also be needy and bright having scored over 370 marks to qualify,” he said.

He urged parents and guardians to observe integrity during application, warning that any discrepancy will lead to disqualification.

Mutua also urged parents to monitor their children closely to prevent them from risking their lives due to crime and other wayward behaviour.

Wote/Nziu MCA Felix Mateso called for an increase in the amount of bursary funds to cater for the rising number of students.

He added that the criterion for allocating bursaries should be changed from ‘per parent’ to ‘per student’ saying that some parents have 3 children and only one child ends up benefitting while the rest are left out.

The county Director for Vocational Training Maingi Mailu encouraged students to take advantage of technical and vocational institutions to gain practical skills which will boost their employability as well as be a source of livelihood.
