Some 23 needy students from Vihiga County have been offered scholarships courtesy of The African Canadian Continuing Education Society (ACCES).

The Society has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the County government of Vihiga to sponsor students, the first cohort of the devolved unit’s secondary school scholarship programme initiated four years ago.

Speaking during the issuance of the scholarships on Tuesday, ACCES Education Coordinator Dr. Anthony Mutevane, said they are also assisting other needy cases in Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega and Trans-Nzoia counties.

He said that they settled on 100 of them and so the remaining 77 slots have been shared by the four counties and they will be looking forward to inviting another round of applications in February next year to keep bringing light to the less fortunate students from the region who are having harsh time to continue with studies.

At the same time, Vihiga County Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, lauded the Society for their philanthropic gesture and urged them to sustain the spirit.

Dr. Ottichilo promised that the county administration would offer attachment opportunities to those pursuing courses in engineering and medicine.

He stated that since the County has invested considerably in the beneficiaries, they are bound to join its labour force upon graduation as a way of paying back.
