Twenty-two students from Amabuko Secondary School are receiving treatment at Keroka Hospital after sustaining injuries during a mysterious fire outbreak at their school.

According to Ichuni Ward MCA Wycliffe Sioacha, the fire broke out in the dormitory last evening and injured the students who tried to quench it.

“I went to the institution, assessed the damage, and took and assisted in carrying the injured students to the hospital. I thanked God that all of them were alive,” he said.

He called for quick police intervention to investigate the cause of the fire accident and inform the public and the affected parents and teachers to enable them to take precautionary measures for the institution.

Some student boxes and suitcases were saved from the fierce fire that burnt down a dormitory at the school.

When Education News visited the affected school, damage was conspicuous- live embers rose from the gutted dormitory.

Some boxes haphazardly holding students’ belongings lay carelessly on the ground as students looked in awe from a distance, trying to come to terms with the horrifying inferno.

None of the staff was ready to comment on the incident.

When Education News tried to inquire from the principal about the depth of the damage, he was too scared to evaluate.

“We’re not sure, but it’s big. Give us time to recover from this shock, please. We can talk later,” he said.

A preliminary medical report confirmed that those students admitted to the hospital were stable, saying that the majority of them were going to be discharged soon and appealing to their parents not to panic.

“They are responding to medication well and are eating well; they will go home, son, ” said the medical officer.

This incident recurs after five years when the school lost a dormitory that burned down.

The fire that occurred in 2021 destroyed students’ bedding and books, leaving 70 students to spend the night in the cold.

Parents who spoke to Education News asked the administration to conduct a thorough investigation, establish the cause of yesterday’s fire incident, and curb it as soon as possible to avoid trauma to students, especially those in form four who are preparing for their National examinations.
