20,000 JSS interns will be engaged in July, says TSC

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chairman Dr Jamleck Muturi has revealed that 20,000 intern teachers will be employed for JSS in July.

It is a huge relief for graduate teachers after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chairman Jamleck Muturi confirmed that 20,000 slots for intern teachers in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) will be advertised in July.

Speaking at the official opening of the 47th   Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Conference and Exhibition at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa, Muturi revealed that the recruitment will kick off in July as the government seeks to ensure the smooth transition of Grade 8 learners to Grade 9.

Muturi said the shortlisting and interview process will be expedited to allow the teachers to report in September.

This comes a few weeks after the Finance Committee of the National Assembly Chair Kimani Kuria revealed that the government is seeking to allocate funds to hire 20,000 teachers to address the teacher shortage experienced in JSS institutions across the country.

“The funds have also been provided to hire 20,000 interns next month. The policy is now to transition teachers from internship to permanent and pensionable terms,” Kuria said.

The sub-sector has been receiving a huge boost as the government also announced that it has allocated a sum of Ksh18.9 billion for confirmation of all 46,000 intern teachers into permanent and pensionable terms (PnP).

The move to confirm the 46,000 interns follows a standoff between the teachers and the employer – Teachers Service Commission – over their employment status, which resulted in a standoff, a strike, layoffs and even a pending court case between the interns and the employer.

However, once confirmed, it is not clear where the money to hire interns as announced by Muturi will come from.
