2,000 CBC classrooms nearing completion, 700 done, says Education CS

The government has completed building 700 classrooms for the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) representing 10 per cent of the planned 6400 classrooms, the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has disclosed.

Speaking at St. Mary’s Secondary School in Kangundo where he commissioned one of the classrooms on Wednesday, Prof. Magoha said the target was to complete the construction of the classrooms before the end of year exams start in three weeks’ time.

“We are putting up 6400 classrooms which mark the first phase in preparation for January next year when the current Grade 5 pupils will transit to junior school,” said Magoha.

The Grade 5 pupils will be in grade 6 in May this year.

Prof. Magoha said the program will not be affected by transition politics adding he was not worried about the availability of resources as he was doing what he had to do as the CS in charge of Education. He also said they had identified some schools with surplus classrooms and there will be no need to put up more classrooms in such schools.

He said CBC was not exam oriented like the current 8-4-4 system adding children going to Grade 6 next year will have done 60 per cent of their assessment leaving only 40 per cent for the final exam and therefore nobody will have to cheat in the final exams.

Prof. Magoha said children will be exposed to their areas of interest at an early age in order to help them decide their career path in advance.

Prof Magoha said the CBC system was also a cure to integrity issues that have existed in the setting, printing and administration of exams.
