Wajir East witnessed a significant milestone on February 20, as 200 young people graduated from the DigiTruck training programme during a ceremony held at the ICT Hall in Wajir.

The event was attended by Principal Secretary (PS) for Culture and Heritage, Ummi Bashir, Wajir East MP Adan Daud and the County Commissioner for Wajir, Karuku Ngumo.

Their presence underscored the national and local governments’ commitment to expanding digital access and strengthening youth empowerment in the region.

The graduation marked the successful completion of a five-week intensive training programme delivered in partnership with Huawei. The DigiTruck initiative is designed to enhance digital literacy and technological capacity within local communities, particularly in underserved areas.

Participants received hands-on training in basic information technology skills, software development and digital entrepreneurship. The programme aimed to equip young people with practical competencies that can be applied in both employment and business ventures

In regions such as Wajir, where access to advanced technological training has historically been limited, initiatives like DigiTruck play a critical role in narrowing the digital divide. By bringing technology directly to the community, the programme ensures that young people are not left behind in an increasingly digital global economy.

The collaboration with Huawei reflects a broader effort to foster innovation, strengthen public-private partnerships and accelerate development in marginalised areas. Such partnerships are essential in creating sustainable opportunities for youth while contributing to long-term economic growth.

Speaking during the ceremony, PS Ummi Bashir emphasised the initiative’s transformative impact.

“By equipping the youth with practical technological competencies, the DigiTruck initiative is bridging the digital divide, nurturing a generation of innovators, and opening pathways for employment and economic empowerment,” she said.

Her remarks highlighted the importance of preparing young people to compete and thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. She noted that digital skills are no longer optional but essential for meaningful participation in today’s economy.

The DigiTruck initiative not only addresses existing technological gaps but also fosters an environment where creativity and innovation can flourish. By equipping youth with relevant, marketable skills, the programme enhances employability, supports entrepreneurship, and contributes to sustainable economic growth in Wajir East and beyond.
