200 teachers in Kiambu County have been trained on ICT skills through African Digital Schools Initiative (ADSI) programme.

The programme, which was initiated in 2017 is run by UN’s Global E-Schools and Communities Initiative (GESCI) for four years, is enabling teachers acquire innovative ways of imparting knowledge to the learners.

Maxwell Kayesi, a physics teacher in Karuri High School who scooped ICT Teacher of the Year 2018 Award, said the initiative was the right thing to enhance teachers’ skills.

“The teachers are now equipped with modern skill and have been trained on how to develop E content,” said Kayesi, who also has Head of State Commendation (HSC).

Kayesi noted that the training will go a long way in addressing learning challenges as learners can be able to access the information at school computer labs on their own.

Carolyne Magoma, a teacher at Queen of Peace Nembu Secondary school said ICT has improved teacher competency.

Ann Njeri, another teacher noted that the use of technology has greatly promoted student-centered learning.

Christine Odera, the project coordinator, said that teachers were able to deepen their knowledge on content creation which will be used in schools.

She said that ADSI works with schools to improve their ICT structure which is meant to help school administrators make right priorities in their Strategic Plans.

The programme targets 10 teachers in 20 secondary schools across five counties as a pilot project of the Africa Digital Schools Initiative.

800 teachers from Nyamira,Taita Taveta, Narok and Kiambu counties are currently being trained in ICT.

Some 80 schools have been earmarked for the Sh750 million ICT programme being implemented by GESCI, the AU Commission and the Education ministry, with support from the MasterCard Foundation.
