20 students from Karagari Secondary school in Evurori, Mbeere North have been treated and discharged from Ishiara Level 4 hospital after experiencing severe diarrhea with the county health department ruling out Cholera.

While speaking to Education News on phone, Embu county Chief Officer in charge of Public Health Daniel Mbogo said that they discovered that the students have been consuming untreated water from Thuci river after they tested samples of the water and found it unfit for consumption.

He thus urged residents to refrain from consuming the water before treatment by boiling or other methods.

“Our tests have shown there is a bacterium called giardiasis which once in the stomach manifests like Amoeba hence causing diarrhea,” he said.

Mbogo said the incident is a replica of what is happening in a number of schools and residences in the area where people have been complaining of stomachaches and diarrhea.

“We have assured all the students, teachers and all the residents of Ishiara that there is no cause for panic,” he said.
