19-year-old student who tried procure abortion 8 times speaks out

Sallyshoel Malemo, 19, from Bumula Constituency in Bungoma County has narrated how she unsuccessfully tried procuring an abortion eight times.

Incidences of teens dying while procuring abortion have been on the rise in Bumula Constituency and  parents has been asked to advice and guide their children well to avoid such in mishaps.

Addressing health stakeholders delegates in a hotel in Bungoma, she explained how she was conned of Sh9,000 by a a midwife who tricked her that she could help her abort a three months pregnancy.

The form two student said that after she became pregnant she was advised by other teenagers who were pregnant not to abort  and instead keep  the pregnancy to full term and give birth instead.

She noted that she was advised to procure an aborton by his boy friend who later disappeared after her parents reported the matter to the police for intervention.

Speaking to the press, Stage Media Arts Bungoma director Steve Owiro pointed out that the main aim of meeting health stakeholders is to reduce teen pregnancies. He said his organisation has rescued many teens from early teen pregnancy as well as those who were defiled.

”This organisation is there to make sure that teen pregnancy is eradicated in the community and teens engaged accordingly,” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by Mariam Mohammed Programs manager Stage Media arts who said that the organisation is engaging local communities, civil society organisation, the church and local administration to help in reducing teen pregnancies.
