170 secondary students in Wundanyi Sub-county receive full sponsorship

170 students from Wundayi sub county, Taita Taveta county can now smile after they received full scholarships for their secondary education.

Speaking at Werugha Social hall in Wundanyi Sub-county, area Member of Parliament Mr. Danson Mwashako stated that 120 students from different areas of Wundanyi Sub-county have benefited from the Simawukiwa sponsorship.

He added that 50 students from different secondary schools across the Sub-county benefitted from the “University Direct” sponsorship which targets students who have challenges in paying fees but they have the potential of doing well in exams and joining universities.

He also said that his focus was sponsoring a person from families where no one had been educated.

“When I was campaigning, I did a baseline survey to find out what causes poverty in my area and found out that there are educational challenges. We have identified children from families where no one has gone to school for sponsorship so that they can change their families,” he added. 

The scholarship project is supported by the National Government –Constituencies Development Fund and other stakeholders who have worked closely with the Wundanyi Sub-county CDF and has seen over 800 students get scholarships since its launch in 2018 by Mwashako.

Mwashako noted that they are expecting to spend about Kshs 20 million for sponsorship which will be divided equally amongst students across all forms in secondary.

He also encouraged other leaders in the county and the country at large to invest more in the education of their students.

He finalized by stating that leaders should go deep in identifying beneficiaries of education scholarships in a bid to ensure that even average students from poor backgrounds can access sponsorship and have a chance to study.

Speaking to Education News, Mwambela Maghanga, a parent from Kishushe location applauded the legislator for his support.

Yale Primary school teacher Madam Mghanga, a teacher to Mghanga Mary Wali who was among the top students in Wundanyi Sub-county, congratulated the MP for supporting education in the area. She added that many students have been failing to join secondary Schools because of the challenges of fees but through the MP’s sponsorship, they can now go to school.

Mghanga Mary Wali, a beneficiary of the scholarship expressed her joy and promised to study hard so that she can change her family’s background.
