170 content creators graduate in Kisii after a week’s training

Kisii MP Doris Aburi awards a youth a certificate after he graduated in film production.

170 youth have graduated after undergoing a one-week training on film production in Kisii and now want to use the skills to create content and be self-employed.

The 170 were jointly supported by Kenya Film Commission, Kenya Film School, and Kisii County’s chapter of National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).

Kisii County Woman Representative Dorice Donya Aburi said another 200 will undergo the same training soon.

The youth, said the MP, were drawn from the county’s 9 constituencies, noting that they will form self-help groups in their respective areas.

“The groups will be transformed into savings and credit cooperatives (Saccos) to empower them economically,” Aburi said after she awarded them certificates of merit.

The lawmaker said the groups will get money from NGAAF for investment and creation of a wider network to improve their lives and livelihoods.

Geoffrey Machoka, a beneficiary, lauded the organizers and urged the MP to sponsor more training sessions for a longer period for the youth to learn and acquire more skills.

“I learnt about film production and mastered it. There is no need for me to say I am jobless. The period was short and we request that it be extended,” Machoka said.

Bisieri Otengo said she had learned skills in film production, stressing that she will also teach others how to create content and make films to help them earn a living.

“I have been empowered with skills free of charge. I could have paid Ksh800 if I were to go to a film school to learn,” Otengo said during the graduation.
