A 17-year-old boy narrowly escaped death after he was attacked by a lioness and its cubs at Imbirikani in Kajiado County.

The boy is currently nursing injuries at Imbirikani Level Four Hospital.

According to locals, the boy was assaulted when he tried to rescue a cow which was part of the livestock he was herding from the lioness’ attack.

In the recent past, cases of human-wildlife conflicts have increased in the area which borders Amboseli National Park with several people having lost their lives and a number of animals getting killed.

Last month, residents of Olgira, Rombo ward in Kajiado South killed three elephants after they trampled to death a two-year-old child.

On May 13, this year morans killed 6 lions that had invaded homes at Mbirikani-Amboseli near Oloitokitok in the same sub-county.

In June last year, an elephant killed a teacher in Masimba. Locals protested the killing by blocking roads leading to the death of four people who were shot by GSU officers.

Several schools have also been invaded by wildlife with a number of students missing school due to their attacks.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has been accused of taking too long to compensate families who are victims of human-wildlife conflicts.

Early this month, Wildlife, Tourism and Cultural Heritage Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza announced that the Ministry had begun a Ksh958 million payment process towards victim compensation. Pending claims since 2014 will be prioritized.
