17 learners die in dorm fire at Endarasha Hillside Academy

Hillside Academy administration block.

Seventeen pupils from Endarasha Hillside Academy, Nyeri have lost their lives and 14 others rushed to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital after a fire broke out and razed a dormitory last night.

Nyeri County Police Commander Benjamin Rotich confirmed the fatalities stating the fire broke out around midnight when most of the students were asleep.

Reports indicate that the first responders arrived at the scene but were unable to contain the raging inferno which had spread quickly making it hard to contain.

Although the fire brigade and local residents responded swiftly, the flames had already spread throughout the dormitory.

The school’s management has already informed parents on the situation  and the scene has been cordoned off by the police.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Deputy Director John Onyango and Director of Homicide Martin Nyoguto were dispatched to the school to initiate investigations.

The Kenya Red Cross is on-site to provide psychosocial support services to the pupils, teachers, and affected families and has set up a tracing desk at the school.
