1688 ECDE teachers have been confirmed on permanent and pensionable terms by Kitui County Government, the governor Julius Malombe using the State of the County Address to make the announcement.
The event took place at the Kitui County Assembly Chambers, which was attended the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), some government officials, the clergy and members of the public.
“At the advent of devolution in Kenya, ECDE and vocational training were devolved. Pursuant to this mandate, the Kitui County Government has designed projects and programmes tailored towards promoting Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) and vocational skills development targeting mainly our youth,” Dr Malombe said.
He said the county has constructed a number of ECDE centres to meet the rising demand as population increases.
“To provide a conducive learning environment, we have constructed some 85 ECDE classrooms across the county. The county government has also provided teaching and learning materials to the various ECDE centres across the county,” the governor said.
“We further established a new vocational training centre in the Katothya Village, Mwakini Sub-location, and completed the stalled Information Communication Technology (ICT) Workshop at the Mutonguni Vocational Training Centre in Kitui West District, as well as the twin workshop and toilet blocks at the Syou Vocational Training Centre in Endau Location within the county’s Mutitu District,” the governor added.
Malombe announced that they are also undertaking some pro-poor infrastructural projects worth 60 million shillings in the county.
“These include the construction of a 2-floor administration block at the Matinyani Boys Secondary School, a dining hall at the Tiva Vocational Training Centre, a 4-door pit latrine at the Mui Vocational Training Centre, and the completion of the eight stalled classrooms at the Ithiani Vocational Training Centre,” he said.
The governor said that to boost the education sector in the county, his government will continue to increase funds allocated to the County Pro-poor Fees Support Programme, including the enhancement of the infrastructure component of the programme.
The occasion was also addressed by the Deputy County Governor Augustine Wambua Kanani and County Assembly Speaker Kevin Katisya Kinengo.
