165 people at the Machakos Technical Institute for the Blind have been admitted to hospital after a cholera outbreak erupted in the area.
According to a police report seen by Education News, 155 of them are in stable condition while 10 are on Intravenous (IV) Fluids.
The patients have been isolated in the school and are being attended to by medical personnel from Machakos Level Five Hospital.
The County Health Executive Committee Member (CECM) Daniel Yumbya told the press that the situation had been contained.
He noted that the total number of cases recorded in the hospital so far was 184.
The outbreak is suspected to have started at Machakos GK Prison where 17 cases were confirmed to be positive.
Yumbya announced that they had banned food hawking around the town for two weeks and urged hotel owners to practice high levels of sanitation while locals have been advised to ensure they use clean water in a bid to curb the outbreak.
“We will review the ban after two weeks depending on how the situation will be,” said Yumbya.
The county health boss noted that health officers in conjunction with community health volunteers are working to ensuring no further spread of the ailment.
