Over 150 girls from AIC Mukalala Secondary School in Yatta sub county have received free sanitary towels donation courtesy of a drive by the spouses of MPs from the region.
Led by Yatta MP’s wife Jackline Basil, the spouses said the initiative aims to ensure girls stay in school during their menstrual cycle.
Faith Musyoka ( Mwala), Evelyn Makau( Mavoko), Beatrice Mutiso ( Machakos Town), Pauline Mutinda( Matungulu), Hellen Nguna ( Mwingi ),Jane Mbui(Kathiani) and Yatta CDF Chairlady Josephene Munyalo took part in the initiative.
Basil said many girls skip school due to lack of basic hygiene products, revealing further that through the initiative, the girls were also educated on hygiene and sexually transmitted diseases.

She called on education stakeholders to support the initiative to ensure 100 per cent retention of girls in schools.
“When the underprivileged girls cannot afford sanitary towels they miss classes or turn to young men, who end up impregnating them, for provision,” she said even as she noted with concern that there were so many cases of teenage pregnancies hence there is need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to bring curb the vice.
Host principal Mr Koti lauded the women for the initiative, saying that provision of sanitary towes to school- going girls is vital as it helps keep them in school.
