13 scholars, professionals proposed for National Hero Status ahead of Mashujaa Day

Thirteen scholars and professionals have been proposed for national hero recognition by the National Heroes Council ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.

The nominees, drawn from diverse fields including education, medicine, veterinary science, engineering, media, and public service, are being honored for their exemplary contributions to scholarship, professionalism, and research. Among the proposed are:

Solomon Ikote, is recognized for his leadership in promoting good governance at Tharaka University, where his stewardship has strengthened financial performance and institutional growth, Prof. Susan Wanjiru is celebrated for pioneering advanced surgical procedures in small animal care and founding the Kenya Small and Companion Animal Veterinary Association, which has elevated standards in veterinary orthopaedics and public health.

Nicholus Orang’i is honored for his dedication to critical care medicine and mentorship in clinical teaching, while Sylvester Angoye Musikoyo is feted for transforming Koyonzo Secondary School into a national symbol of academic excellence and implementing key education reforms including the Competency-Based Curriculum.

Prof. Kenneth Wyne Mutuma is acknowledged for his scholarly work in governance, international law, and alternative dispute resolution, while Dr. Majid Mbarak is celebrated for decades of clinical excellence in internal medicine and his role in mentoring future medical practitioners. Dr. Simon Okumba Miruka is honored for his lifelong work in gender equality, policy advocacy, and social development across national and international platforms.

James Ouma Okaka is recognized for his research in construction practices and value management, contributing to improved project performance and cost-effectiveness, Prof. Bosire Monari Mwebi is feted for over three decades of educational consultancy and his role in shaping Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum through the presidential working party on education reforms.

Dr. Elicanah Moenga Mosiori is celebrated for his exemplary service in public administration and human resource development, Mwanahamisi Hamadi is honored for her work as a television anchor spotlighting Kenyan women’s innovation and resilience through the program Mwanamke Bomba, while Dr. Ibrahim Ondeko Matende is recognized for transforming eye care training and establishing the first children’s eye clinic in the coastal region, while advocating for grassroots trachoma treatment.

The National Heroes Council has invited public consultation on the proposed names. Members of the public wishing to submit objections or representations must do so in writing, accompanied by a sworn affidavit, within 14 days of the notice dated 30th September 2023. Submissions can be emailed to heroes@heroes.go.ke or delivered to the Chief Executive Officer at the National Heroes Council offices located at Uchumi House, Mezzanine Floor, Aga Khan Walk, Nairobi.
