Slightly over 1,000 students have scored Grade A in the just released 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results, under the new grading system.
Announcing the results this morning at Moi Girls High School-Eldoret, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu indicated that 1,216 candidates scored grade A (plain) in 2023 compared to 1,146 in 2022.
Further, 7,254 candidates scored grade A- (minus), 18,078 attained B+ (plus), 36,728 got B (plain) and 78,343 got C+ (plus).
In total, 201,133 candidates (22.27 %) scored grade C+ (plus) and above, thus guaranteeing direct entry to university.
Furthermore, 92,612 candidates scored grade C (plain), 107,471 candidates scored grade C- (minus), 125,006 candidates scored grade D+ (plus), those who scored grade D (plain) totaled 155,276 with the majority of the candidates scoring grade D- (minus) standing at 165,861, while those who scored grade E were 48,174.
Machogu attributed the improvement in performance to the new grading system which was unveiled in September last year where only two mandatory subjects; Mathematics and one language (English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language) are graded, in addition to five of the best-performed subjects.
A total of 903,260 students sat last year’s KCSE exams, an increase from 881,416 candidates in 2022.
The CS revealed that Mathematics, Kiswahili and Biology were among the 12 subjects that recorded significant improvement compared to last year. In total, 30 subjects were administered.
However, unlike previous years, candidates will not be able to access their KCSE results through SMS. This time round, individual results will be accessed online through the URL: www.results.knec.ac.ke, with Machogu noting that official result slips will be accessible through examination centres where the candidates sat for their exams.
Last year, Machogu announced that the Ministry of Education was exploring discontinuing the use of SMS service to check national examination results after errors were witnessed during the release of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.
