Tharaka Nithi branch KNUT Executive Secretary, Njeru Mutani, has raised alarm over the high number of teachers who have stagnated in one grade for a long period of time. The unionist called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to act swiftly and ensure the affected teachers are promoted immediately.
Speaking in his office in Chuka town, Mutani disclosed that over 12,000 teachers have stagnated in the same grade without promotion for over five years in Tharaka Nithi County.
He said it is unfair for a teacher to remain in one grade or in an acting capacity for a period of five years noting that such action will inevitably demoralize them.
“TSC deserves an award for the most heartless and insensitive employer who cannot take care of his employees. Over 12,000 teachers have stagnated in the same grade without promotion for over five years in Tharaka Nithi County. This is very unfair and demoralises the teacher,” said Mutani.
He said 4,595 teachers have stagnated in grade C1 to C2, 2,637 in grade C3 to C4 while 652 are stuck in grade D3 to D4 adding that another 4,750 diploma teachers still remain at the same grade five years down the line.
He said 150 principals, deputy principles and head of departments have also been stuck in the same grade without promotion for the last five years.
The KNUT official also regretted that the 2021 – 2025 CBA has not yet been implemented three years down the line.
“We have confidence with the Kenya Kwanza government because it has shown that it has faith with the teachers. The Deputy President Gachagua himself said never again will the teacher be disrespected, rejected or abused. We are expecting good results from this regime,” said Mutani.
He called on the government to prepare a supplementary budget in a bid to ensure that all the deserving cases are taken care of through promotions.
Mutani said the move will motivate them noting that the teachers should get justice immediately because justice delayed is justice denied.
