Taita Taveta County Governor Granton Samboja has awarded 100 students who are expected to join form one scholarships worth Kshs 20 million.
The 100 students from the needy backgrounds who excelled in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) were drawn from all the 20 wards in the County.
Speaking during the award ceremony held at his office grounds in Mwatate sub county, Samboja encouraged the students to work hard bearing in mind that they are representing the county at large.
He told them that they have the potential to change their humble backgrounds.
Samboja also challenged male students to work hard stating that currently there are fewer male professionals in the county.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) executive secretary Mr. Shedrack Mutungi assured students that they will be provided with the vital learning materials and be mentored well while in school.
“Maintain discipline and remain focused on your studies so that at the end, you achieve your goals. We will talk to our teachers and ensure that they mentor you in your secondary schools,” said Mtungi.
Kenya National Union of Teachers represented by Grafton Mzee, who is also the chairman of Bura Bursary committee also encouraged the students to work hard in school.
He stated that having a privilege to get full sponsorship means that they have a potential to do well and change the societies they come from.
Governor Samboja has suspended all the county functions and meetings for a period of 14 days following the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the county.
Students were provided with three facemasks each as a way to ensure the spread of Covid-19 virus is curbed.
