With the current state of economy this January, 102,619 teachers will go without their leave allowances at the end of the month due to technical hitch. The software malfunctioned saw some teachers underpaid by between Sh2,000 and Sh5,000.

In a statement yesterday, Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) Head of Communication, Kihumba Kamotho apologised to the teachers saying the error will be corrected and the allowances will be paid in February.

“It is regrettable that leave allowance for 102,619 teachers has been underpaid as we implemented new pay grades created after the 2017-2021 CBA,” he said.

The allowances, which is part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiated with teachers’ unions was to be the first payment under the CBA.

Under the CBA, teachers are supposed to get their leave allowance in one installment and should be paid together with the January salaries.
