The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has announced plans to soon start retooling examiners for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

The council while responding to concerns raised by teachers regarding the pilot study for Grade 9 exams in JSS, specifically about the roles of invigilators and examiners has said that some have already been invited to participate in the Kenya Junior Secondary Education assessment (KJSEA) pilot exam scheduled for July 15-19, 2024.

“We will soon embark on retooling of examiners for Junior secondary and some have already been invited for the purpose of the KJSEA pilot,” said KNEC in a statement.

It advises teachers to remain patient during the rollout of the assessments, noting that it has already created a database of 42,000 examiners.

“They are advised to be patient as we roll out the assessments. We have already established a data base of 42,000 examiners,” KNEC added.

Earlier this year, KNEC rescheduled the KJSEA and Kenya Prevocational Level Education (KPLEA) summative assessments. Originally set for July 1-5, 2024, the dates were moved to July 15-19, 2024.

The current Grade 9 students are being prepared to take their exams next year. Following this, they will enroll in Grade 10 at Senior Schools for three years under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in 2026.

During their time there, they will select one of three pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences, commonly referred to as Humanities; or Performing Arts, which includes music and athletics. This approach is part of the government’s effort to enable specialization within the curriculum.
