Varsity unions warn non-striking members of stern action

By James Wakahiu

Officials of Kenya University Staff Workers Union (KUSU) and Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) will disown members who decide to take up jobs while the strike is ongoing.
The warning was issued by UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wsonga, his KUSU counterpart Charles Mukhwaya and UASU National chairman Muga K’Olale at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
Mukhwaya said they decided to go on strike after the Inter-Public Universities Consultative Council Forum (IPUCCF) failed to implement a Collective Bargaining Agreement for university workers despite four meetings between the parties.
Wasonga said last year all the public universities were allocated Sh33 billion out of the Sh99 billion disbursed to the education sector but lamented that the institutions were not involved in the important budget making process.
The officials said they would not relent in their push to have the CBA which is two years in arrears signed.
