Confusion and uncertainty marred Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Annual General Meeting in Nyamira County after a school venue was locked.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) ordered the administration of Kebirigo Boys High School not to allow union to hold its AGM at the school premises.
The local Teachers Service Commission Director, Olendo Onono wrote a letter to the Principal, Andrew Gesora against allowing the union to hold the meeting within the school compound, something which angered the unionists and more than 1,000 teachers who had turned up for the meeting.
Executive Secretary of Nyamira Knut branch, Kennedy Migosi said Onono delivered the letter to the teachers at a time when the meeting was to kick off.
“The Director communicated to us at the time when we were due to start the meeting and we had no option but to start looking for an alternative place where we could conduct business,” said Mr Migosi.
The angry teachers were stranded for more than two hours as an alternative venue was being sought by the union’s officials who included the National Treasurer, John Matiang’i and Mr Geoffrey Mogire, member of the National Executive Council.
They later converged at Viongozi Center, a conference facility owned by the local Catholic Church.
