Head teacher freed from jail after demonstrations

A primary school head teachers in Embu who was jailed for not paying a debt owed to a contractor was recently realized after students, parents and union officials protested.

Patrick Mutuku from Karaba Consolata Primary School, Mbeere South Sub County, had been jailed for 30 days by Embu court after the school failed to clear Sh400, 000 owed to a contractor.

The students held peaceful demonstrations protesting the jailing of their head teacher.

The over 400 pupils accompanied by their parents boycotted classes and camped at the nearby Karaba primary school where Ministry of

Education, head teachers and teacher’s union officials met to deliberate on the arrest.

Carrying twigs, they sang songs demanding the release of their teacher disrupting learning at Karaba Primary School.

The contractor, Mr. John Njeru had constructed two classrooms at the school for Sh1 million and had been paid Sh700, 000.
