The National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) has donated Sh7.1 million to disabled persons and educational institutions that cater for people with disabilities in the Eastern Region.
The donations are meant to uplift economically people living with disabilities and make them feel part of the larger society.
Some 28 institutions that cater for people with disabilities received cash donations totaling Sh6.6 million while the Fund also presented equipment worth Sh585,000 to individuals with various disabilities.
The funds will finance renovation and construction of disability friendly classrooms, dormitories, water tanks, bathrooms and poultry projects.
The donations were presented to beneficiaries during a function attended by individuals, heads of educational institutions and homes for the disabled by the Vice Chairman of the Fund’s Board of Trustees, Peter Nyakiamo.
Counties that benefited from the donations included Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Isiolo, Marsabit, Isiolo, Machakos, Kitui and Makueni.
The Fund Board of Trustee chairperson, Kristina Pratt in a speech read on her behalf by Nyakiamo said their flagship projects in the region include seven commissioned projects worth Sh17.5 million, four projects in progress worth Sh10 million.
